Prairie Garden Farms...in the snow!

Here's what Prairie Garden Farms looks like on a lovely Autumn day.

No matter!  Our little junior farmers were up to the challenge of becoming helpers on the farm for a day and were eager to learn all that they could.  We started in the pumpkin patch where we learned that pumpkins don't like the cold and that frost is not their friend,
To help the farmer, we set up an assembly line and picked and passed the pumpkins that were still in the field.  Tonight they would be housed in one of the greenhouses.
Look at all the shapes and sizes of pumpkins we found.  We learned that there is a blue pumpkin, which is the best one to buy if you want to make pumpkin pie.
Our next stop was a tipi, with bales of straw inside to sit on.  We found out that the straw is both scratchy and pokey!
We learned a little bit about life long ago for the early peoples in Alberta.
Did you know that it was the women who put the tipi up, took it down and moved it from one location to another?

Thanks to the dads and moms and the grandma who came to help us during this day!
We heard the story of the Little Red Hen told with the use of puppets, and some cool music that we could clap along to!
Instead of trying out the corn maze, we went through a bale maze.
Ask your kiddo what the straw is used for!
It was fun to sit in the wagons and have the tractor pull us around.
You can see from our smiles that we all loved it!

There really is a farmer!  Her name is Farmer Tam.  She took us into the garden and let us pick some things to eat.  There was a leaf that looked like an arrow and when we ate it, it was as sour as a lemon.  We tried kale and chives and lettuce too.
Each of us got to pick our own apple and eat it.  The apples were the best ever!

We saved what we couldn't eat to share with a new friend....
the goat, who loved the treats we brought her.
She ate everything, even the seeds!
Silly little goats!  They climbed up into the hay feeder,
and stuck their head in through the cracks.

This guy wanted to show he was bigger than any of the kiddies!
The bunny was huge!
Can you tell that this is a goat?  He dove right in!
Here was a little sheep.

Thanks for dressing your little ones for the chilly weather.  It must have been a good day because I did hear a boy say "This is the best field trip ever!"  A little snow?  It doesn't matter to us...we love to learn!
