Have you met this cute cat? His name is Pete and he has an amazing attitude. When you read his story, you find out that 'no matter what you step in, you should keep walking along and singing your song." It's a wonderful story to get the little ones in my class to understand that you don't need to get upset about little things. They LOVE Pete and will be hearing many of his stories over the next few months.
In the "Take Home folder" that will come home on Tuesday this week because of the extra long weekend, your child's retelling activity will be found inside. Have your child sit down and tell you all about Pete. Don't be surprised if they break out in song!
There are many, many times that the children move from their table spots during the day onto one of the two rugs that are in the class. Here are a couple of shots of the students sharing in the class-made books and the thematic books that are in a bin near the rug. The class-made books focus on topics that we are discussing and often have repetitive text so that the students can be successful in 'reading' the books all by themselves.
This past week was National Read-In Week, and we were visited by Officer Jason who shared a story called 'Hog Wash' with the class and then shared why reading is important to being a police officer.
Officer Jason is a member of the County of Strathcona peace officers and was very willing to listen to all the questions that the students had for him.
Wednesday afternoon was super fun as our Grade Six Buddies came to our classroom and helped the Grade One students with a pumpkin investigation, using the pumpkins that they chose at Prairie Garden Farms on Monday. They used unified blocks to see how tall the pumpkins were, and then tried to see if they could find out how many little plastic bears would balance the pumpkins.
It is such a blessing to have a sink in the classroom! This made the question of whether a pumpkin will sink or float when placed in water, much easier to answer. Guess what! It floats!
The Grade Six Buddies helped with cutting and pasting for a book that will be made and read next week, as well as...
assisting the students with making fingerprint pumpkins for another counting book that will also be completed next week.
It really was a 'beehive' of activity all afternoon, but so lovely to see!
Remember when you were asked to assist your child find an item to share that demonstrated what group they might belong to? This led to great discussion within the classroom and with the photos that were taken, we created this bulletin board to show some of the groups that we identified as the ones we were part of. Thanks for helping your child bring that item to school. They were so proud!
