What ever has been happening in Grade One?  Why haven't I posted in almost 2 weeks?
My apologies but it is report card time and each evening has been filled with that important task so that the good work that we have been doing in the classroom hasn't been shared.
They are done now and will be visible on PowerSchool on Feb. 2nd.  Enjoy!
I have to thank another teacher, Cheryl Stadnick, for sharing her wonderful idea of creating centres for the students to explore colours in the classroom.  That you to the moms and grandma who came to help the students last Thursday.  I really could not have done it without them and the children learned so much!

At this first centre, the students added water to paint to turn it from opaque to transparent.  They learned that water will change the depth of colour.
Here the students were using food colouring and coffee filters to watch as the primary colours bled together to create secondary colours.  Can your child name the primary colours?  Can they share which secondary colours are made with which primary colours?
The students added a speck of white paint to each primary colour, over and over again to see the tint change.  When white is added, the colour becomes lighter.
Another chance to make secondary colours using primary coloured plasticine.
Thanks to the families who rolled out all those little plasticine balls for us!
The students added a speck of black paint to each primary colour, over and over again to see the shade change.  When black is added, the colour becomes darker.

At the centre that I was leading, the students learned that light can be broken up into all the colours of the rainbow.
We tried to break up the light using a flashlight in a dark space.  We shone the light on a crystal, some prisms and on a CD.  Can your child name all the colours of the rainbow in order?

Wouldn't it be fun if we could play in the snow the way that Peter did in this classic story?
We tried.....
and here's the results!
It was a new experience for me to make foamy snow using shaving cream and white glue!
The students tried to recreate one of the activities that Peter participated in outside in the snow, such as making a snow angel or
throwing snowballs or
making footprints in the snow.
They all turned out so well!
We've been praying for snow.  We would like to go outside and do those things, just like Peter!
